Laser Tattoo Removal at BeCammo, Malta

How laser removes a tattoo

A tattoo stays in the skin because the ink particles are too large for the body to carry away. Laser tattoo removal sends very short pulses of light into the skin. The ink absorbs that energy and breaks into smaller fragments. Over the following weeks, your immune system clears part of them naturally, and the tattoo looks a little lighter after each session.

It is a gradual process. No one can remove a tattoo in a single visit, and the skin needs time to recover between sessions. Depending on the tattoo and on what you want, the goal can be full removal or simply fading it enough for a cover-up.

At BeCammo, laser tattoo removal is done at our Sliema salon only, on Triq Manwel Dimech. Every case starts with a consultation, so you know what is realistic before the laser is switched on.

Who it is for

People come to us for different reasons: a name or a date that no longer fits, a tattoo that did not heal well, a design that needs to fade before a cover-up, or old semi-permanent make-up that has changed colour.

How well a tattoo responds depends on things we can only judge by seeing it. Black is usually the easiest colour to treat, because black pigment absorbs all laser wavelengths. Other colours can only be treated by lasers selected for that pigment. Older, faded and amateur tattoos often clear faster than new, dense professional work. Some colours, such as light greens, blues and yellows, are often harder to shift.

This is not the same treatment as our laser hair removal, which is not used over tattooed skin.

Tell us before your appointment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have tanned or sunburnt skin, an active skin infection or broken skin on the area, a tendency to keloid scars, or if you take medication that makes your skin sensitive to light. We will advise you on whether to go ahead or wait.

How it is done, step by step

  1. ConsultationA 15-minute appointment with our specialist that costs €15. We look at the size, colours, age and position of the tattoo, check your skin type and ask about your health and medication.
  2. Plan and priceThe price per session follows the size of the tattoo: small, around 40 mm, is €50; medium, around 80 mm, is €85; large is €110. You get the price for your tattoo and an honest estimate of how many sessions it may take before the first one.
  3. Preparing the skinThe area is cleaned and you wear protective eyewear, as with any laser treatment.
  4. The laserThe laser is passed over the tattoo. Most clients describe quick, sharp snaps, like an elastic band flicking the skin. The appointment is booked as 30 minutes, and on a small tattoo the laser itself takes only a few minutes. The ink often turns whitish for a short while. That is a normal reaction and it fades.
  5. Soothing and aftercareWe calm the skin and explain how to look after it at home.
  6. Healing, then the next sessionThe tattoo keeps fading for weeks after each visit. The next session is only booked once the skin has fully healed.

Removing old microblading and semi-permanent brows

Microblading and other semi-permanent brows are meant to fade, but they do not always fade evenly. Over the years the colour can turn grey, reddish or orange. Sometimes the shape is not what you wanted, or old pigment gets in the way of new work. Laser can lighten or remove that pigment. At BeCammo, microblading laser removal costs €75 per session and is booked as a 30-minute appointment in Sliema.

Brow pigment is not the same as body tattoo ink. It sits closer to the surface, which often means fewer sessions. On the other hand, some cosmetic pigments change colour under the laser before they fade. That is one of the reasons we assess the brow first and explain what to expect. The number of sessions depends on the age, size and colour of the pigment, on your skin tone and on how deep the pigment sits.

  • Your brow hair. The laser can make brow hairs look lighter for a while. They usually return to their natural colour as they grow.
  • New brows afterwards. The skin has to heal completely before new pigment goes in.

BeCammo does both sides of this work, so the removal can be planned with the next step in mind. If you want new brows later, read about our Brazilian microblading, microshading and nanoblading. If you prefer to stay natural while the pigment fades, eyebrow threading keeps the shape tidy.

Before and after each session

Before

Keep the area out of the sun, and away from sunbeds and self-tan, in the weeks before your session. Tanned skin has to wait. Come with clean skin, without cream, perfume or make-up on the area. For brows, that means no brow make-up on the day.

After

Redness, swelling and tenderness are normal for a few days. Some people get small blisters or scabs, which are part of healing. Keep the area clean and dry, do not scratch or pick, and let any scab fall off by itself. Avoid pools, the sea, saunas and heavy exercise until the skin has closed.

Once the skin has healed, protect it with a high-factor sunscreen whenever it is exposed. Picking scabs and early sun exposure are the most common reasons for marks or uneven colour afterwards. If you notice signs of infection, such as increasing pain, heat or pus, message us and see a doctor.

How many sessions, and what result to expect

It depends on the tattoo and on you. These are the things that change the number of sessions:

  • Ink: colours, density and how deep it was placed. Professional tattoos usually need more sessions than amateur ones.
  • Age: older tattoos have often faded already and tend to respond faster.
  • Position: tattoos far from the heart, such as on the ankles or feet, tend to fade more slowly.
  • Your skin and health: skin tone, how you heal and habits such as smoking all play a part.

We give you an estimate at the consultation, based on the age, size and colours of your tattoo and on your skin type, and review it as we see how your skin and the ink respond.

Many tattoos fade very well. Some leave a faint shadow of the design, or a slight change in the colour or texture of the skin. Nobody can honestly promise complete removal, and we will not. If your aim is a cover-up, a few sessions of fading may be enough: tell us what your tattoo artist is planning.

Remove, fade or correct: which one do you need?

Not everyone needs the same thing from the laser. These are the three most common goals:

Your goalWhat it involvesGood to know
Full removalA course of laser sessions until the ink is as faded as it will goTakes the most sessions. Some tattoos leave a faint trace
Fading for a cover-upFewer sessions, just enough to lighten the old designGives your tattoo artist more freedom with the new design
Old microblading or brow pigmentLaser sessions at €75 each, after assessing the browPigment can shift colour before it fades. New brows only after the skin has healed

Laser Tattoo Removal: questions clients ask

How much does tattoo removal cost in Malta?

At BeCammo Sliema, laser tattoo removal starts from €50 per session for a small tattoo of around 40 mm. A medium tattoo, around 80 mm, is €85 and a large one is €110. Microblading laser removal is €75 per session. The consultation costs €15 and takes 15 minutes.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Most clients describe quick, sharp snaps, like an elastic band flicking the skin, and many compare it to getting the tattoo. The laser part is short, and on a small tattoo it takes only a few minutes.

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

It depends on the age, size, colours and position of the tattoo, and on your skin type. We give you an estimate at the consultation and review it as the tattoo responds.

Will my tattoo disappear completely?

Many tattoos fade very well, but no one can honestly promise complete removal. The result depends on the ink and on your skin, and some tattoos leave a faint shadow. We tell you what is realistic at the consultation.

Can old microblading be removed by laser?

Yes. Microblading laser removal at our Sliema salon costs €75 per session. We assess the brow first, because some pigments change colour before they fade, and new brows can only be done once the skin has healed.

Is tattoo removal available in Swieqi?

No. Laser tattoo removal is available at our Sliema salon only, at 6, Triq Manwel Dimech.
